Lady Gaga is in line to play Harley Quinn alongside Joaquin Phoenix in the sequel to the multi-award-winning, $1 billion-grossing film Joker. What’s more, the sequel is reported to be a musical!

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the second Joker will be titled Joker: Folie à deux, which references a “medical term for an identical or similar medical disorder that affects two or more individuals, usually members of the same family.”

“If a deal makes, Gaga would play Quinn,” writes Borys Kit. It makes sense: why else would you hire Gaga’s singing chops for a musical, if not by starring her in a leading role?

“Details on her character are being kept under wraps, but Joker is known for his on-off abusive relationship with Harley Quinn, his psychiatrist at the Arkham Asylum mental institution who falls in love with him and becomes his sidekick and partner in crime. It is unclear whether Phillips and company are using other DC characters or striking out on their own, as they did in many instances with the first movie.”

In Joker: Folie à deux, “[Harley Quinn] exists in a different DC universe than Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, who most recently appeared in 2021’s The Suicide Squad as well as several other films.”

Fans are split about the news that the sequel could be a musical. Twitter user @sagehyden wrote “joker 2 as a musical is literally the most chaotic decision any movie studio has ever made. every one that was excited for a sequel is mad. every one that thought a sequel was unnecessary is excited. pure chaos. you love to see it.”

The original Joker movie caused controversy. Ani Bundel, NBC News, asked: “Was it a masterpiece or a mistake? An ode to complex humanity or violent “incel” white men?”

Twitter user @targ_nation agrees that Joker was “THE movie for straight men,” and is calling  news that the sequel is a musical starring Lady Gaga “the biggest yassification in cinematic history.”
